Algeria Insures Oil Production Against Accidents

Algerian state-run oil company SUNATRAC paid more than $6 billion in annual premiums to insure its oil installations against technical and human accidents.

The ministry of energy and mines said SUNATRAC insured its oil fields and other strategic installations as part of an overall protection and preservation plan. It said $300 million were paid only for monitoring the safety of gas refineries.

Oil production in Algeria was estimated since the beginning of the year at 163 million tons, the equivalent of 1.4 million barrels per day.

The country plans to increase its production to 1.5 million barrels per day, although its OPEC share is only 830,000 barrels per day.

In addition to oil, Algeria exports 62 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
