Eni Expect Russian Gas Shortfall

Italian oil and gas company Eni SpA said it expected natural gas supplies from Russia to be 13.5 percent below requested volumes for a 24-hour period starting Wednesday morning, The Associated Press reported.

The company released the figures a day after the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a trip to Rome that his country would increase gas supplies to Europe and was studying other delivery routes to prevent future shortfalls.

Eni said supplies from Russia were 11.5 percent below requested levels on Tuesday. It said it will use existing stocks to offset the shortfall. Russia?s natural gas monopoly Gazprom says the supply reductions to European customers do not violate contracts.

Last month, Gazprom worried European governments by halting supplies to Ukraine during a price dispute, which led to sharp drops in supplies to other countries farther west. Most of the Russian gas that goes to European consumers moves through Ukraine?s pipeline network.
