Germany and other European countries have for some time wanted to become more independent of Russian supplies.
Norway is able to deliver more. A new gas pipeline to Europe must be built, and this will increase capacity by around 15 billion cubic metres of gas, Stoltenberg said.
He said he hoped Merkel would accept an invitation to visit Norway next year.
- I hope she will come, and that we may visit Mongstad, and see how we are building a gas powered power plant and develop methods for the cleansing of CO2 emissions, Stoltenberg said.
Merkel said she was pleased with having Norway as a reliable supplier of energy to the German market. She said these deliveries were of vital importance to the German economy.
