On Tuesday US Senator John McCain held up federal taxes on gasoline sales this summer to help recover American consumers of record prices and stimulate the nation's economy.
The presumed Republican nominee for president, in a speech on the economy in Pittsburgh, also recommended again that the US government defer filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Monday US gasoline prices got to a new average high of $3.389/gal, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Federal taxes amount to 18.4 cents/gal.
McCain said the US Energy Department should stop putting oil in SPR over the same summer period. The Arizona senator said the purchases contribute to high oil prices.
The White House declined to comment Thursday on McCain's call for a temporary suspension of the federal gasoline tax. Dana Perino, the White House press secretary, said the administration is "always for lower taxes," but she refused to officially endorse McCain's plan.
