Kuwait National Petroleum Company, KNPC, the national oil refining company of Kuwait, has granted contracts to build the 615,000 barrel per day Al-Zour oil refinery to Korean and Japanese construction companies.
The total value of the bids made by the companies was around US$8.3 billion.
Texas based Fluor was awarded a consultancy contract.
One contract for the main manufacturing units was awarded to a consortium of Japanese JGC Corp and South Korea's GS Engineering and Construction Corp for US$4 billion.
SK Engineering and Construction of Korea was awarded the subsidiary units for US$2.06 billion, while Daelem Industries, another South Korean firm, won a contract of tanks for US$1.184 billion.
Korea's Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co was awarded a contract for offshore facilities at US$1.12 billion, Ajmi said.
Kuwait has earmarked KD4 billion (US$15 billion) to build the new refinery to be constructed in the southern Al-Zour area, close to the border with Saudi Arabia.
