Plane Fuel Back To Surge

It has been less than a month since the last price increase, and oil companies are raising the price of airplane fuel again. On June 1, the price of kerosene at Moscow airports will rise 13 percent to 36,140 rubles (almost Euro 1000) per ton. The cause of the price increase is higher prices charged at the refineries, which are raising prices in Russia to world levels. It is the fourth price rise in a year and brings the price rise since the beginning of the year to 36 percent. The last price increase, on May 5, was 12.3 percent.

Experts expect the price of airplane fuel to continue to rise both in Russia and around the world. The June 1 increase in railway freight transportation charges of 8 percent will also be felt in fuel prices. Independent fuel suppliers will be hardest hit. One supplier noted that airlines are buying less reserve fuel because of the high prices and paying for their fuel less regularly. Observers say that prepayment for fuel may be required of airlines eventually.

Rosavia, the state sectoral supervisory agency, and the airlines are hoping for the government’s support. “Unfortunately, airlines do not have the resources to influence the aviation fuel market, which is monopolized in Russia,” commented Olga Trapeznikova, director of the AiRUnion press center. “The state should initiate the process of regulating fuel prices.” Rosavia is preparing a letter to the fuel companies encouraging them to “find a mechanism to hold down fuel prices.” Gazprom Neft spokesmen said they were prepared “to discuss any suggestions for the stabilization of market prices with the government” but noted that the prices are “dictated by the market.”
