RWE AG. prefers to swap its German gas grid for foreign assets over a straight sale of the grid, which it has vowed to divest to end a pending EU antitrust probe, chief executive Juergen Grossman told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
"Obviously, we would like to remain active and grow in the gas business (even) without a grid," he said.
He did not specify what kind of assets RWE would find acceptable as part of an asset swap.
The German utility this weekend said it will sell its German gas grid within two years to settle EU antitrust proceedings against it.
Peer E.ON AG. earlier said it has agreed to sell its German high-voltage power grid as well as some 4,800 MW in power generation capacity as part of a similar deal with the EU Commission.
Grossmann said RWE is considering different options for its own power grid, but said there are currently no immediate plans to sell it as well.
