Aker Clean Carbon Stops CO2 Capture Plans

Aker Clean Carbon has decided to stop the construction of a CO2 capture demonstration plant at Kaarstoe in Rogaland, Southern Norway.

The main reason is uncertainty about required steady supply of flue gas.

The gas power plant that was meant to provide the flue gas has not been in operation since its completion in the autumn of 2007, and there is great uncertainty about the regularity of future supply of flue gas. It has also proved difficult to gain access to alternative flue gas from the nearby gas terminals
Instead, Aker Clean Carbon will together with Aker Solution and two other companies build a major CO2 capture facility for a coal-fired power plant in the UK.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2014. The project also includes establishing transport and permanent storage solutions for CO2. in addition to building the capture plant.

ScottishPower, the UK energy group, is among the pre-qualified entrants and has chosen ACC as the technology provider for the CO2 capture plant. Aker Solutions is going to build the plant, according to the plan. The consortium also includes Marathon Oil, the US energy group.
