Sinopec: Commercial Operation In South

China Petroleum & Chemical Corp., the nation's largest refiner, started commercial operations at a refinery in the island-province of Hainan to safeguard fuel supplies in the south, including cities like Hong Kong and Macau.

Sinopec Hainan Petrochemical Co. began operating commercially on July 1 after 21 months of trial runs, China Petrochemical Corp., parent of China Petroleum, or Sinopec, said in its newsletter today.

The 11.4 billion-yuan ($1.66 billion) refinery can produce 5 million metric tons a year of gasoline and diesel that meets Euro III emission standards and 1.2 million tons annually that is on par with Euro IV requirements, according to the newsletter.

The plant turned 4.02 million tons of feedstock, including crude, gas and methanol, into fuel products in the first half of 2008, China Petrochemical said today.

That compares with 8.02 million tons processed last year, it said. Sinopec started operating the 8 million-ton-a-year, or 160,000 barrel-a-day, refinery in September 2006.
