The Brazilian unit of Portugese Galp Energia said that it found traces of oil and gas while prospecting in the Potiguar Basin, according to Brazilian National Petroleum Agency

Portugal's Galp Energia Found Oil and Gas in Brazilian Potiguar Basin

The find was made at the POT-T-354 onshore block in the Potiguar Basin on the border of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceara states. Galp is lead operator of the block, with a 50% stake. Brazilian state-run energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro (PBR) owns the remaining 50%.

The discovery follows a similar find announced late Thursday by Galp in the inland SEAL-T-412 block in the border region between northeast Brazil's Sergipe and Alagoas states. Galp is also lead operator of that block, holding a 50% stake, while Petrobras retains the remaining 50% share.

Oil companies operating in Brazil must inform the ANP of indications of oil, gas or hydrocarbons in any exploratory well within 72 hours. The disclosures are routine, and do not indicate commercial viability.
