Maksat Idenov, First Vice President of KazMunaiGas (KMG) and key Kazakh government negotiator for major oil and gas projects, has resigned from his position, New Europe reported on Sunday. “Maksat Idenov […] submitted his resignation in early April. So far, there has been no order to release him,” KMG’s spokesman Galym Tumabayev confirmed to New Europe. Idenov has reportedly left Kazakhstan, New Europe said citing a source.
Idenov, who has had extensive international experience including stints at the World Bank and Royal Dutch Shell, led Kazakhstan’s negotiations on the Kashagan project in 2007. Since 2009, Idenov oversaw all major oil and gas projects in Kazakhstan, including Kashagan, Tengizchevroil, Karachaganak, and the N Block. Recently, Idenov has been directly involved in negotiations on the Karachaganak project, the only major oil and gas project without KMG’s participation.
