The Kazakhstan government plans to set its customs export duty on crude at $20 per tom, Kazakhstan Finance Minister Bolat Zhamishev announced. On Monday, Kazakhstan Prime Minister Karim Masimov told a joint sitting of parliament that the government intended to restore the customs export duty on crude which was repealed in January 2009.
"Twenty dollars a ton is a general figure, which will be discussed as one variant based on predictions of oil prices, Zhamishev said. He said that according to his calculations, the average tax burden on subsoil users will increase from 40 to 44 percent. "If oil will cost $200, we could review the rate, but for now, forecasts do not include any dramatic shifts (on oil prices)", Zhamishev said.
