Baltic states will stop to buy electricity from Belarus after the launch of the Belarusian NPP

Tallinn, September 2 - Neftegaz.RU. Estonian Ministry of Economy announced that Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia reached an agreement to stop buying electricity from Belarus after the launch of the Belarusian nuclear power plant near Ostrovets.

Estonian ministry noted that electricity trading in the Russian-Latvian section will continue to a lesser extent, using the remaining capacity of domestic trade between the Baltic countries. The volume of trade between Kaliningrad and Lithuania will remain the same.

According to preliminary estimates, the volume of trade between the Baltic countries and third countries will halve after an agreement, according to the ministry.

Belarus NPP with two VVER-1200 reactors has a total capacity of 2400 MW. Belarusian NPP Unit 1 became the 1st unit of the newest Gen 3+ built using Russian technologies abroad.

To construct the 1st NPP in Belarus, it has been decided to rely on the Russian 3+ generation design that is fully compliant with the international standards and IAEA safety recommendations. The 1st power unit of the NPP is scheduled to be commissioned in 2020, the 2nd unit in 2021.

In 2017 Lithuanian parliament confirmed in the law the statement that the BelNPP is unsafe and poses a threat to Lithuania’s national security, environment, and public health. The purpose of this law was also to restrict the import of electricity from Belarus.
