ENI has started to drill an exploratory well fourteen miles north west of Malta. The well was spudded on Wednesday to test the petroleum potential of a geological structure on the southern flank of Italy's Ragusa basin, where oil has been produced since the 1950s. ENI was granted an oil exploration license by the Malta government in January. Drilling is being carried out by Transocean Sedco Forex's semisubmersible, Actinia. The will be the tenth well drilled offshore Malta so far. All previous wells proved to be dry.
