Russian government approves $5.7 billion pipeline that will give Russia direct access to Western Europe...
Russia's Prime Minister, Mikhail Kasyanov, has signed a resolution that will allow the launch of the North European gas pipeline project of Gazprom. This resolution will allow a direct connection between Russian gas pipelines and the common European gas transportation system. Furthermore, it will enable Gazprom to export gas bypassing all transit countries. Construction of the new pipeline is to begin in mid-2004.
The resolution states that the government supports the project and instructs the Energy Ministry and Gazprom to prepare all necessary documentation and the State Construction Committee and the Natural Resources Ministry to study the potential of natural resources and to conduct expert examinations of the regions through which the gas pipeline will be built.
