Tax Authorities Strike Again
$1 billion tax bill handed to another Russian oil major...
The Russian tax ministry is demanding oil major Sibneft pay $1 billion of allegedly unpaid taxes on its 2000-2001 profits, according to an unidentified ministry official.
Sibneft spokesman Alexei Firsov acknowledged the company had received such demands from the ministry but said the claims were groundless. "The company's activities over this period have been probed several times, and none of the probing instances have ever issued claims regarding tax payments," Firsov said. "We are prepared to submit to more probes and are convinced that we are in total accordance with the law," he added.
Russian tax authorities last July launched a probe into Sibneft's accounts.
