Eighteen-year pause finally over...
Occidental Petroleum Corp has resumed activities in Libya's oil sector after an 18-year pause by opening an office in Libya.
The opening of the office came during a four-day visit to Libya by the head of Occidental Petroleum, Ray Irani, in which he met with Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, the Jamahiriya news agency said.
Irani, who concluded his visit Monday, also held talks with officials of Libya's national oil company on future cooperation, the agency said. It quoted him as expressing optimism that several other U.S. companies will return to work in Libya.
Los Angeles-based Occidental Petroleum, which began producing oil in partnership with Libya in 1966, reached a peak output of 800,000 barrels per day in 1970. In 1985, its last full year operating in Libya, Occidental's share of production was 47,000 barrels per day.
