The Itera trading company has decided to wind up its operations in Uzbekistan, squeezed out by Russian gas giant Gazprom.
State oil and gas company Uzbekneftegas says Itera has not renewed its contract to use the country's gas pipelines to move Turkmen gas north to Russia and then on to customers in other former Soviet states. The contract is expected to be handed over to Gazprom.
Gazprom, whose former management in the Yeltsin era had close links to Itera, has also managed to oust its rival from Azerbaijan this year.
Itera, which is registered in Jacksonville, Florida, says its $60 million net profit for 2003 was "significantly lower" than in 2002 due to cuts in supplies.
