Nippon Cashing Out

Japan's Nippon Oil Corp plans to shut down about 20 unprofitable gas stations in fiscal 2004 and put up for sale assets worth 20-25 bln yen.

The major oil distributor aims to dispose of 10-20 bln yen worth of property annually in fiscal 2005 and beyond.

In addition to the service station sites, the company will also sell land used for oil storage tanks as well as housing and holiday accommodations used by its employees.

Of its 1,451 gas stations, Nippon Oil has written off losses on 210 facilities, of which 10 pct will be closed in the current fiscal year due to low sales.
