New Zealand: more than ten service stations of South Island appear to have been closed over the next few months, the most of them are Mobil-branded.
In Christchurch one Mobil station closed at the end of March and the owner of another says he is meeting the oil company this week to discuss his station's future.
The company Petroleum Solutions, involved into the problem, confirmed it removed tanks at more than a dozen petrol stations that were closing. Mobil stations formed the bulk of stations being closed, but other oil companies were involved too.
Mobil spokesman Peter Thornbury said there might be a number of stations that had petrol supply contracts with the company coming up for renewal at the same time. However, as far as he knew, Mobil did not have a list of stations it wanted to close that it was steadily working through.
Neither did Mobil have a deliberate policy of closing small or suburban petrol stations, in favour of the larger ones, by not renewing their supply contracts.
Shell New Zealand spokesman Simon King said while New Zealand was "over-pumped", the company had not targeted neighbourhood service stations.
