Monday the attorneys general of Oregon and Washington sent letters to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission chairman, in which they criticized the work of the agency for its investigation of energy giant Enron. Also they called for immediate enforcement action to protect Western ratepayers.
Both attorneys general urged Patrick Wood, FERC Chairman, to provide state investigators with "any and all documents" related to Enron efforts to manipulate the market and to hold the bankrupt Enron accountable.
A FERC spokesman Kevin Cadden said the agency already is working with these states and has asked Congress for additional authority to punish market manipulation.
"Pat Wood has said he does wish he had more authority under the Federal Power Act to do more and act quicker," Kevin Cadden said. "But we can only use the tools that Congress has given us, and these things take time."
