Russian gas monopoly Gazprom has offered to buy the 51 per cent of Romanian gas distributor Distrigaz Sud, which has been put up for sale by the government , at the same time with the privatization of Distrigaz Nord.
Distrigaz Sud and Nord together control 55 per cent of the gas distribution market in Romania.
Gazprom chairman Alexei Miller met president Ion Ilescu today and they pledged cooperation between the two countries in the gas sector, in particular a possible increase of gas deliveries to Romania, the Russian group added.
Romania uses 18 bln cubic meters of gas of which 5.7 are imported.
Gazprom deliveries make up 90 per cent of Romania's gas imports.
