Enron Rescue Plan Facing Problems

Wednesday Enron?s reorganization plan appears to face a serious trouble, when the Oregon Public Utility Commission's staff recommended regulators to block the sale of Enron subsidiary Portland General Electric (RGE).

Last week, nevertheless, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge approved Enron's reorganization plan, which calls for the company to sell PGE. Enron acquired the utility for $3 billion in 1997.

But the sale is subject to the approval of Oregon regulators, who determine whether the proposed sale benefits PGE customers and does not harm the public.

Public Utility Commission case manager Bryan Conway said the Commission staff determined there were too many unanswered questions about the risks for customers. PGE serves 740,000 customers in the Pacific Northwest, mostly in Oregon.

The company and regulators will continue discussing the matter.
