The largest gold mining companies of North America said they unlikely could rescue South African Gold Fields from an undesirable takeover bid by its compatriot Harmony Gold.
Placer Dome and Newmont Mining denied Gold Field?s request, saying that they have other businesses and deep-level operations are not their speciality. Placer Dome's vice-president of investor relations, Joe Danni, said the company had already invested significantly in South Africa, "and I think our preference is to make that investment work before we consider further investment". Newmont said it had not considered investing in South Africa.
