BP, Shell, Total Want Turkish Gas

Several global energy companies such as BP, Shell and Total are interested in Turkey's bids for gas purchase contracts as part of a liberalization drive in its energy sector.

Turkey's state natural gas pipeline company Botas invited tenders for six gas purchase contracts, the equivalent of 16 billion cubic meters, last week under a law passed in 2001 with backing from the International Monetary Fund.

The law expects Botas selling its natural gas import and wholesale contracts to lower its market share to 20 percent by 2009.

The contracts correspond to 64 percent of Turkey's 25 billion cubic meter natural gas consumption market.
