Shell Resents Senate Remarks

The management of Shell Petroleum Development has refuted allegation of arrogance against towards the company by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Compliance on Senate Resolutions, John Brambaifa.

Brambaifa had in some reports allegedly described Shell as arrogant and constituting a threat to national security by refusing to pay the $1.5 billion compensation to the Ijaw aborigines as resolved by the National Assembly. He also alleged that Shell's position on the matter amounted to an affront to the highest legislative body in the country.
Shell described Brambaifa's attitude as ?erroneous?. The company?s statement read: "We wish to correct the erroneous impression that SPDC, operators of the NNPC/Shell/Agip joint venture, pioneers in oil and gas production over 60 years, is an arrogant company and pose any threats to national security.

"SPDC maintains that it is a responsible corporate citizens, and that it has over the years sought to carry out its operations in
Nigeria in a responsible manner and in compliance with the Regulations issued by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and other regulatory agencies, and in accordance with the best international standards available.

"We have been doing, and we will continue to do, all that is possible and practicable to discharge our economic, social and environmental responsibilities to all stakeholders.
