Sakhalin Aboriginals Are Against Oil Development

An indefinite protest action of the local national minorities is to begin in the North Sakhalin on December 20, Russian news agency RIA Novosti repots.

According to the Association of Indigenous Nations of North Sakhalin, the pickets of Nivkhi, Oroki, Nanais and Evenki will block the transport routes involved in the construction of international oil projects' infrastructure.

Association leader Alexei Limanzo said the decision to hold the protest action was made at the 5th congress of indigenous small nations of North Sakhalin held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the regional centre, more than a month ago.

In his words, the congress delegates expressed concern over the ecological aspects of the oil companies' operation in the living and economic zone of the small Sakhalin nations. Besides, the Association called for an independent examination of industrial development of the traditional areas of the indigenous nations and land use in the north of the island.
