Pemex Faces Big Fine and Lawsuits

Mexican state-owned oil company Petroleos Mexicanos is to be fined as much as $200,000 and may face several criminal charges for spilling 5,000 barrels of crude into a river flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, coating local beaches, a Mexican government said Thursday.

The Environmental Protection Agency plans to file a criminal complaint against Pemex in January.

The spill occurred after an early Wednesday explosion at a pumping station near Santiago Tuxtla, about 250 miles east-southeast of Mexico City. Five people were injured.
