The residents of Richmond, the town in northern California, have sued US oil and gas major ChevronTexaco Corp over a refinery shutdown on Aug. 9, 2003that spewed dangerous gases into the air and caused health problems.
The hydrogen sulfide gas released by a burning flare was measured at levels "in excess of (air quality) rules," the lawsuit filed in Contra Costa County Superior Court said.
Dean O'Hair, ChevronTexaco spokesman, said the company had not been served with the lawsuit but would "defend ourselves vigorously in court."
