British oil and gas giant BP and also some North Sea gas producers were warned by Britain?s Labour party yesterday that they could face a billion pound tax to compensate consumers for huge price rises in 2004.
The chairman of the trade and industry select committee, Martin O'Neill, scrapped with BP executives Steve Peacock and Alan Hayward, demanding to "get their act together" on prices to stop a hole being created in the UK's manufacturing base.
After the row, O?Neil said he was "not against" a tax. He threatened tougher regulation to prevent possible abuses by the five top gas producers who share 60% of the market.
