Petrobras Drilled To Record Depth

Brazilian oil company Petrobras announced that it had drilled on Friday 6,407 meters below sea level, the deepest ever drilling into the Brazilian continental shelf.

The drilling occurred in an oil exploration block in the Santos Basin off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

Petrobras drilled down to a depth of 6,407 meters below sea level in an area where the ocean is 2,038 meters deep.

"At this depth, Petrobras went beyond the salt layer of the Santos Basin, and hit the so-called 'pre-salt section' where promising reservoirs of light oil and gas are expected," the company said.

The exploration drilling is in the BM-S-10 oil and gas exploration block, in which Petrobras is lead operator, with a 65% stake. BG Group PLC (BG.LN) has a 25% participation in the block, and oil firm Partex (Oman) Corp. another 10%.
