Exxon Mobil confirmed on November 28, 2017, that the $14 billion Hebron offshore oil platform has produced its 1rst oil.

The company hit the milestone 1 month ahead of schedule.

It happened 20 years and 11 days after 1st oil was produced at the Hibernia platform.

The Hebron oil field was 1st discovered in 1980, and is estimated to produce more than 700 million barrels of oil throughout the lifespan of the project.

The structure is 278 metres high, has a 130-metre diameter through the base, weighs 750,000 tonnes and has living quarters for 220 people.

It's expected to produce 150,000 barrels of oil per day at peak production.

Engineering, construction and start-up of the Hebron project took 8 years, and involved over 40 million man hours.

Exxon Mobil Canada Properties is operator of the Hebron project with 35.5% equity interest.

Partners are Chevron Canada (29.6%), Suncor Energy (21%), Statoil Canada (9%) and Nalcor Energy Oil & Gas (4.9%).
