Inpex reached a milestone at its $40 billion Ichthys LNG project

Tokyo, July 31 - Neftegaz.RU. Japanese oil firm Inpex Corporation said that production had begun at the Ichthys LNG project offshore Australia.

Inpex said shipments should be under way by the end of September. The start-up marks the beginning of what is expected to be about 40 years of operations from Ichthys, the biggest ever overseas investment made by Japan.

The project is expected to produce 8.9 million tons of LNG and 1.65 million tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) per year, along with 100,000 barrels of condensate, an ultra-light form of crude oil, per day at peak.

The project consists of the development of the Ichthys gas and condensate field offshore northwestern Australia (in 260 meters of water depth) and a 889-kilometer gas pipeline together with an onshore LNG plant near Darwin.

Operator Inpex owns 62.245% of the project. French Total also has a stake in Ichthys LNG, as do customers CPC Corporation of Taiwan, and Japanese utilities Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, Kansai Electric Power, JERA and Toho Gas.
