Vietnamese electricity giant, Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN), warns there could be blackouts after it released water from its large reservoirs to help farmers overcome the drought that has persisted since late last year, officials said.
The director of the Hoa Binh hydro electricity plant, Nguyen Van Thanh, said the water level at the Hoa Binh reservoir was 2.54m lower than it should be.
He said if the flood season arrived late this year, the plant would not be able to produce enough electricity to meet demand.
Vietnam was hit by its most severe drought in decades late last year.
