Australia is ready to ship LNG exports to Europe if Russia cuts off supplies

Sydney, December 17 - Neftegaz.RU. The Australian government confirmed, that Australian LNG exports could be called upon to help Europe through an energy crisis if Russia cuts off gas supplies to the continent amid ratcheting tensions over Ukraine.

Europe has been at the heart of an energy crisis since last year, when the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions put huge demands on depleted stocks of natural gas.
The EU depends on Russia for around a 3rd of its gas supplies.

Australian Trade Minister Dan Tehan said in a statement:
  • Australian LNG exporters are ideally placed to meet any demand that may arise globally, as Australia stands ready to support our friends and allies in the current challenging and complex, geostrategic environment
Resources Minister Keith Pitt said:
  • Australia is one of the most reliable suppliers of LNG throughout the pandemic and would look to fill any gaps in the gas market
  • This shows how important Australian resources are to energy supplies around the world
Australia is one of the world's biggest LNG exporters.
According to Adelaide-based consultancy EnergyQuest, LNG exports from Australia hit a record high of 80.9 million tonnes in 2021.
