First gas flow from Kuban to Crimea

Crimea received on January 8, 2017, its first natural gas from the Krasnodar Territory via pipeline.

Though there have previously been restrictions on gas supplies for Crimean large industrial enterprises, Mikhail Sheremet – State Duma Committee on Energy and former First Deputy Prime Minister of Crimea – explained that «there is enough gas to fully provide our peninsula.»

On 27 December 2016, Russian President, Vladimir Putin, stated that the pipeline from Russia to Crimea was in-service.

The 386 km pipeline will transport Russian natural gas to the population of the Crimean peninsula.

Putin said: «This is another very important step for the development of Crimea in the long term. The supplies of Russian gas to the Crimean peninsula will allow us to develop its economy as a whole and will also help to meet the social needs of the Crimea and Sevastopol.»

Crimea consumes up to 1,300 MW of electricity. Previously 800 MW was supplied by Ukraine.

Now the region can meet its own energy demands. With the new power stations the peninsula will be able to generate up to 2,000 megawatts, which exceeds demand.
