Iran ready to supply Georgia with natural gas

First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri said Iran is ready to export natural gas to Georgia through Azerbaijan or Armenia.

During a high-profile meeting of Iranian and Georgian delegations in Tehran, the official said Iran can supply the gas needed by Georgia, adding the 2 countries have signed a deal for export of 4 million cubic meters of gas from Iran to Georgia for a period of 4 months.

He said however that materialization of the deal will need settlement of banking issues between the 2 countries.

The Islamic Republic of Iran will materialize a gas export deal with Georgia within a month, said Gholamreza Bagheri Moghaddam, the head of General Department of CIS and Caucasus Countries of the Foreign Ministry of Iran.

Bagheri told that Georgia has purchased Iranian gas, but it has not yet been imported from Iran.

«Georgia stated that it will start implementing gas imports deal within a month,» the head of the department said, reported Azernews.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif visited Tbilisi on April 18, heading a delegation of 20 companies and businessmen representing Iran's public and private sector.

This visit was held at the invitation of the Georgian high-ranking diplomats on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the independence of the former Soviet republics.

Bagheri also added that next week Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili will pay a visit to Tehran.

In July 2016, Ali Reza Kameli, managing director of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) confirmed that Tehran has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the GIEC to export gas to the country within a 4-month period.

Almost 40 million cubic meters of gas will be sold to the company under the test agreement.

Currently, Azerbaijan is the main supplier of gas to Georgia.

Small volumes are also supplied from Russia.
